How to get a medical certificate online... Here's what to do
Feeling unwell and need a medical certificate for work — but can’t get a same-day appointment? You’re not alone. Every year, millions of Australians need to provide a medical certificate to their employer, yet finding an available GP can be genuinely difficult, particularly in regional areas or during peak illness periods.
Telehealth offers a practical, clinically appropriate solution. This article explains how online medical certificates work in Australia, who can issue them, what to expect during the process, and when telehealth is — and isn’t — the right option.
What is a Medical Certificate and when do you need one?
A medical certificate is an official document issued by a registered health practitioner confirming that you are unfit for work due to illness or injury. Under the Fair Work Act 2009, employers in Australia can require a medical certificate for absences exceeding a certain duration — typically more than two consecutive days, though employer policies vary.
Common situations where a medical certificate may be required include:
- Sick leave absences of two or more days
- Single-day absences if your workplace policy requires documentation
- University or TAFE exam deferrals or assignment extensions
- Insurance or income protection claims
- Return-to-work clearances following illness or injury
Can a Nurse Practitioner issue a Medical Certificate?
Yes. In Australia, Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are AHPRA-registered health professionals with advanced clinical training and prescribing authority. They are legally authorised to issue medical certificates under Australian state and territory legislation.
At My Telehealth Clinic, all consultations are conducted by qualified, AHPRA-registered Nurse Practitioners. Certificates issued through our service are valid for use with employers, universities, and government agencies across Australia.
How does an online Medical Certificate consultation work?
Getting a medical certificate via telehealth at My Telehealth Clinic is a straightforward process:
Submit your details online
Complete a brief intake form with your personal information and a description of your symptoms. Your information is stored securely and privately.
Add your payment details
Enter your payment information. No charge is applied until after your consultation is complete
Speak with a Nurse Practitioner
A Nurse Practitioner will call you back — usually within 15 minutes during operating hours — to conduct a clinical assessment of your symptoms.
Receive your certificate
If clinically appropriate, your medical certificate will be sent to you via email. The Nurse Practitioner will advise you if in-person care is more appropriate for your situation
My Telehealth Clinic operates 8am–9pm weekdays and 8am–6pm weekends (AEST). Consultations submitted outside these hours will be reviewed the following business day
What does an online Medical Certificate cost?
Medical certificates at My Telehealth Clinic start from $19.95 for a 1-2 day certificate and $29 for a 3+ day certificate.
Medicare rebates are not currently available for most standard telehealth consultations through our clinic; however, eligibility may vary. Speak with your Nurse Practitioner to understand whether you may be eligible for a rebate under current Medicare arrangements.
