Telehealth consult

Blood Test Request Online

Yes, you can get a blood test request through a telehealth consult. Book a $50.95 phone consult with an AHPRA-registered nurse practitioner or doctor.

They’ll ask why you want a test, about your symptoms and health history, and decide which tests, if any, are right for you. If you need tests, you’ll get a pathology request to take to a collection centre. The results come back to the clinician, who goes through them with you at a follow-up consult.

Telehealth consults aren’t an emergency service. In an emergency, call 000.

How it works

  1. Book a time. Choose a consult on our booking page.
  2. Take the call. The clinician asks about your symptoms, your health history and why you’d like a test, and decides which tests are clinically appropriate.
  3. Get your request. If you need tests, the clinician sends you a pathology request.
  4. Have your sample taken. Take the request to a pathology collection centre. Check the form for any instructions, such as fasting, and the collection centre’s website for opening hours.
  5. Go through your results. The results go to the clinician who requested them. Book a follow-up consult to talk them through. If a result needs urgent attention, the clinic will contact you.

Common reasons for a blood test request

Medicare only covers tests that are clinically relevant to you, so the clinician requests tests based on your symptoms and health history. A general “check everything” panel isn’t usually appropriate.

When telehealth isn't suitable

A blood test request isn’t the right step if you’re unwell now. Call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, signs of a stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech), severe pain, or you feel very unwell.

See a doctor in person if you’ve found a new lump, have unexplained weight loss, or have symptoms that are getting worse. You may need an examination as well as tests. If the clinician decides a telehealth consult isn’t suitable and you need to be seen in person, you’ll get a full refund (clause 6 of our Terms).

Who treats you

Blood test consults are with an AHPRA-registered nurse practitioner or doctor. Nurse practitioners and doctors can both request pathology tests. Medicare covers many common tests requested by either, but a few tests have extra Medicare rules about who can request them. If that affects your test, the clinician will tell you. Read more about what a nurse practitioner can do.

Yes. A nurse practitioner or doctor can assess you in a telehealth consult and, if tests are clinically appropriate, send you a pathology request to take to a collection centre. The results come back to the clinician, who goes through them with you.

The consult is $50.95, and a follow-up consult to go through your results is also $50.95. Medicare rebates for telehealth consults are only available in limited circumstances. Ask your clinician whether you’re eligible. The pathology lab bills the tests separately. Many labs bulk bill tests that Medicare covers, but tests Medicare doesn’t cover have an out-of-pocket cost, so ask the collection centre if you’re unsure.

Yes. Nurse practitioners can request pathology tests, and Medicare covers many common tests that they request. A few tests have extra Medicare rules about who can request them. If that affects your test, the clinician will tell you.

You can ask about a specific test, and the clinician will talk it through with you. They request tests that are clinically relevant to your symptoms and health history, which is also what Medicare requires. Tests needed only for employment, insurance, visa or travel purposes aren’t part of this service.

Only for some tests. Your pathology request and the collection centre will tell you if you need to fast, and for how long.

The results go to the clinician who requested them. Book a follow-up consult to go through them. If a result needs urgent attention, the clinic will contact you. Results may also appear in your My Health Record.

Yes. A sexual health check is a common reason for a pathology request. The clinician asks a few questions to work out which tests you need.

The clinician can talk about whether you need imaging. If you do, they can request it or recommend an in-person review first.
